A Painted Woven Bamboo Basket
Edo period (19th century), signed by Rai San'yo (1780-1832), Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835), Nukina Kaioku (1778-1863), Shinozaki Tasuku (1781-1851) and Goto Shoin (d. 1864)
Rectangular with solid handle, woven sides and removable interior tray, painted with a plum tree, poems and inscriptions in black ink; fitted cloth cover
14¼ x 5 x 9¾in. (36 x 12.7 x 24.7cm.)
This basket was painted and inscribed by a group of literati on a sencha (Chinese steeped tea) outing. One inscription is signed San'yo suidai (Rai San'yo) and sealed San'yo no in. The painting of plum is signed Kaioku (Nukina Kaioku) and sealed illegibly; one poem is signed and sealed Shochiku (Shinozaki Tasuku); another inscription is signed Shinso dojin (Goto Shoin), the son-in-law of Shinozaki Tasuku and pupil of Rai San'yo, and with kakihan (cursive monogram); another inscription is signed Ken dai (Tanomura Chikuden).
