A PAIR OF CINNABAR LACQUER YOKEBACK ARMCHAIRS, NANGUANMAOYI
18th/19th century
Each with a straight toprail with elaborate lotus-carved yoked neckrest and cloud collar supported on corner posts which continue through to the rectangular back legs, the S-shaped rectangular back splat divided into three sections, the uppermost with inset carving with birds and flowers, centered by a landscape scene depicting vignettes of scholarly pastimes, above a narrow, inset, beaded and shaped panel, the S-shaped phoenix head-decorated arms supported by curved stiles and continuing down into the front posts, which further continue through the 'brocade' carved seat to form the square-section front legs, joined by beaded aprons and stepped stretchers, the entire form covered with inventive geometric and symbolic designs, the back and undersides finished in black lacquer
