Lot Essay

A tapestry signed by Jan Raes with nearly identical borders including identical supports to the pergolas and vases of flowers from the collection of Baron Cassel van Doorn, was sold Ader, Galerie Charpentier, 9 March 1954, lot 119. That tapestry, depicting a battle scene, originally belonged to the famed Barberini collection that was purchased by Charles Ffoulke.

The type of borders and the drawing of the subject would suggest that the Jan Raes referred to is Jan I, the first of three weavers with identical name, as the tapestry dates from the late 16th century. Little is know about Jan I but it is believed that he started his workshop in circa 1580.
