The rounded square top with a beaded edge inlaid with foliate scrolls around a central removable checker board, lifting to reveal a backgammon well, raised on a spirally reeded and roundel applied shaft with further inlaid tripartite plinth with scrolled feet, Inscribed to the underside MADE by S.O. ADAMS/No. 1 Edward St. Hampsted Rd.

Lot Essay

This games table is very similar in design to a labelled table by George Merrifield, illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, 1996, p.328, fig. 626-7. Whilst no reference to the maker Adams can be found it is certainly possible that he was a craftsman in Merrifield's employment as the similarities are striking.
