Lot Essay

It is interesting to note that similar forms of this unusual table are known to exist in Barbadian furniture. Whilst the offered lot displays secondary timbers indigenous to Europe, a colonial example recently sold anonymously, Christie's South Kensington, 19 February 2003, lot 452. This example was reputed to have come from the Richmond Plantation in the Scotland area of Barbados and was illustrated in N. Forde, Aspects of the Material Culture of Barbados of the 17th and 18th Century- a case study of Barbadian Antique Furniture and N. Connell, 18th & 19th Century Furniture and its background in Barbados.
