Lot Essay
First offered in Barye's 1857-8 catalogue, Panthère de l'Inde No2 and its pendant, Panthère de Tunis No2 were slightly re-modelled, increased in size and offered from 1860 as Panthère de l'Inde No1 and Panthère de Tunis No1 (see lot 126). Whilst the number of lifetime épreuves was not great, posthumous casts of both models by Barbedienne were particularly popular and numerous. Another cast of this model, also from Eduardo Guinle's collection, was sold in these rooms, 25 May 1995, lot 156 ($5,290).
