PORTRAIT OF A MANCHU LADY

Scroll, mounted and framed, ink and colour on silk
63.5 x 48.5 cm. (25 x 23 in.)
It is suggested that the lady depicted in this portrait is the grand mother of the Kangxi emperor (reigned 1662-1722), the Empress Xiaozhuang. The Empress Xiaozhuang was born in the forty-first year of the Wanli era (1613), and married Huang Taiji in the tenth year of the Tianfu era (1625). She was made a consort of the Yongfu Palace in the first year of the Chongde era (1636), and gave birth to the Shunzhi emperor (reigned 1644-1661) in the third year of the Chongde era (1638). During both Emperors Shunzhi and Kangxi's reign, the Empress Xiaozhuang was active in politics. She died in the tewnty-sixth year of the Kangxi era (1687). For a oomparision of this portrait to another of the Empress Xiaozhuang, see Zijincheng Dihou Shenghuo (Lives of the Emperors and Empresses in the Forbidden City), Palace Museum Beijing, 1983, p.9
