A RARE DATED IMPERIAL INSCRIBED ZITAN RECTANGULAR PANEL
QIANLONG CYCLICAL JIHAI YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1779

The panel is inlaid with various materials in an ensemble to depict scholars' objects including a jade brushpot containing implements, a miniature cloisonné enamel basin with hardstone flowers, a jade carving of a monkey riding on a horse, a jade caparisoned elephant, a quartz bowl, a waterpot, a guan-glazed porcelain containing floral branches and a painting scroll, reserved on an ochre lacquer ground, inscribed to the right hand corner with a seven-line verse followed by the cyclical date, all beneath five lacquered panels each carved with bats amidst clouds surrounding a central shou roundel (minor losses replaced)
