A PAIR OF RARE IMPERIAL LACQUERED-WOOD LANTERN STANDS
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

Each composed of an octagonal waisted platform, surmounted by a caparisoned lion standing foursquare with its head turned to one side, supporting on its back a brocade ball raised on ruyi-clouds, finely painted in red, green, blue lacquer against a brown-ground; the detachable long staff similarly lacquered in brown, and gilded along the shaft with a diaper-pattern stopping before the right-angle, terminating with a slender archaistic phoenix, the underside of the phoenix body fitted with a circular ring for attachment; and a pair of gilt-metal globes, each formed of two halves cast in openwork with dragon roundels (old breaks repaired and lacquer losses)
