Lot Essay

The present vase is from a well-known group of 'High Transitional' sleeve vases painted with elaborate scenes derived from popular late Ming woodblock prints. The new ceramic techniques that developed in Jingdezhen in the 1630's enabled potters to paint scenes with great precision and fine details with the use of the varying shades of cobalt-blue.
