A FINE BLUE AND WHITE 'EIGHT IMMORTALS' BOWL
QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)

The finely potted bowl is delicately painted on the exterior with the Eight Immortals, each holding in their hands their respective attributes, all floating on clouds above swirling waves, the centre of the interior with a roundel enclosing the Three Star Gods, Fu Xing, Lu Xing and Shoulao, seated under a pine tree, all within double line borders

Lot Essay

The scene depicts the legend of the Eight Immortals crossing the sea, and this same detailed pattern is found on other bowls of the period, cf. a pair of bowls sold in these Rooms, 28 October 2002, lot 703; and a single bowl from the Riesco collection included in the O.C.S., Exhibition of Chinese Blue and White Porcelain, London, 1954, no. 309.
