Ben Nicholson (1894-1982), one of the pioneers of abstract art.
The artist Sir William Nicholson acquired the mosaic when he purchased The Manor House, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire in circa 1923. The mosaic was set into the wall above the inglenook fireplace in the medieval vaulted reception hall at The Manor House, having been reputedly acquired by the previous owners in Syria circa 1900-1910.
