The central discus moulded with two figures supporting a pole on their shoulders, carrying a large grape cluster between them, framed by band of Chi-Rho symbols and circular motifs, a cross moulded on the canal nozzle

Lot Essay

The iconography is the Old Testament story of the return of the spies that Moses sent into the land of Canaan to report back on the wealth and nature of the land (Numbers xiii. 23). This iconography was used on both Jewish and Christian lamps, cf. C. Metzger, Catalogue des lampes en terre cuite grecques et chrétiennes, Musée du Louvre, Paris, 1986, p. 118, no. 134, for similar.
