MARTIN, Charles & Leopold. "Civil Costume of England from the Conquest to the present Period, drawn by Charles Martin from tapestry, illuminated MSS, monumental effigies, portraits &, etched by Leoplod Martin", London: 1841. Small 4° (186 x 132mm). ?Manuscript title within coloured wood-engraved historiated border with portraits of Holbein, Zuccaro, Mytens, van Dyck, Hollar, Lely and Kneller underneath, 59 hand-coloured wood-engraved plates only (of 60), some heightened in gilt. (Lacking one plate, printed title and dedication.) Morocco gilt by Bumpus Ltd, Oxford, g.e. (lightly rubbed along joints, a few light scuff marks on rear cover.
The title of our copy has been supplied in manuscript. It differs slightly from the printed title listed by Colas and Lipperheide: the manuscript title does not list a publisher (Henry G. Bohn on the printed title), the wording of the manuscript title is slightly different to the one of the printed title and it is dated 1851 instead of 1852 as on the printed title.
