The first in a sequence of smaller format views of Ibn Tulun, this view shows the extent of decay to one of the main aisles between the arched porticoes. The light casts deep black shadows across the interior space while simultaneously revealing the solid depth of the arcades. Sunlight picks out just enough detail for the viewer to glimpse the broken rubble piled up in the interior. The overall effect is of a strikingly 'modern' architectural photograph.
