Lot Essay

A fine study of one of the better-preserved remains at Baalbek. Given the poor state of so much of the site, it must have been a thrill to study such a beautifully complete section of the wall from the great court of the Temple of Jupiter. This semi-circular exedra was one of a series of alternating semicircular and rectangular recesses, which were partly screened by red and grey granite columns. Later photographs show the extent of excavations, which removed the chunks of stone which have fallen in the center, and dug deeper to reveal the whole of the lower tier of niches and the bases of the attached columns at either side.
