He travelled south as far as Philae. His photographs from Upper Egypt are dated 1843 or 1844, as are his photographs from Syria, while his photographs from Palestine are dated 1844. It remains difficult to be sure in what order he visited the individual sites.

Lot Essay

One of only two panoramas in the photographer's archive showing palm trees along the river Nile, this daguerreotype appears to have been exposed on half of the plate only, possibly with the intention of using the remainder of the plate again for another exposure. The distant palms create a thin black silhouette between the light bands of sky and water, using the elongated horizontal format to advantage.
