AN INTERESTING TREENWARE & SILVER PRESENTATION SNUFF BOX REGARDING THE CAREER OF H.M.S. GIBRALTER (1780)
the circular box and lid with inset silver plaque extensively engraved: His Majestys Ship Gibralter of 80 Guns, built by the Spaniards in the Island of Cuba and launched in the year 1751 by the name of Phoenix, captured by Sir George Rodney in the year 1780 commanded by Admiral Langara the Admirals Flag was presented to His Magesty George the 3rd. by his son Prince William Henry a Midshipman in the Fleet. She was taken to pieces in Pembroke Dock Yard in 1836. THE GIBRALTER, was instrumental in saving the life of Lieut Chas Elsmere of his Majestys Ship Terrible when he was upset in her launch in Torbay in the year 1800. She was then the leeward Ship of the Fleet then at Anchor, and picked him up at Night nearly exhausted, the Fleet lying with Yards and Top Masts struck and the Sheet Anchor let go. This box was given by his old Friend Capt Samuel Jackson C.B. R.N. -- 3in. (9.5cm.) diameter
