A PRUSSIAN ROCOCO SILVER-GILT LINED ENAMEL SNUFF-BOX WITH MINIATURE INSIDE
Berlin, Fromery workshop, circa 1750
Cartouche-shaped white enamel on copper box with bombé sides, the slightly domed cover decorated with a raised gilded and colourfully painted scene of Meleager presenting the head of the Caledonian boar to the virgin huntress Atalanta, in a riverside landscape, the sides similarly decorated with a cartouche on the front wall, running Apollo, on the left hand side, persuing Daphne being transformed into a tree on the right hand side, and a reclining goddess on the reverse, the base painted in purple camaïeu with a hunting scene in a landscape, reeded silver-gilt mounts with wavy thumbpiece, the inside of the lid inset with a watercolour on parchment miniature of a fête champêtre under glass, the inside of the base silver-gilt lined
