Lot Essay

The backing paper is inscribed 'Portrait trés ressemblant de ma fille Claire par isabey 1798 en decembre'
Claire, daughter of Charles Gilbert de Morel-Vindé and his wife Elisabeth Choppin d'Arnouville, married Claude Hippolyte Terray (1774-1849) on 10 January 1799. After her early death, Terray remarried twice. Claire and Terray had four children including Claudine Béatrix, marquise de Belbeuf (see lot 241).
An autograph replica of the present miniature is in the Château de La Motte-Tilly at Nogent-sur-Seine, inv. no. 90-19.
