Lot Essay

The Dorset Shell Guide, which was published in 1936, involved Nash in much travelling, historical research, drawing and writing. His interest focused particularly on such places as Maiden Castle and Badbury Rings, fortresses that witnessed man's efforts to defend themselves against each other, but which are seen now repossessed by nature, and which speak for the emptiness of human endeavour (see A. Causey, op. cit, p. 271).
