TASSO, Torquato (1544-1595). La Gerusalemme Liberata ... con le figure di Giambatista Piazzetta. Venice: Giambatista Albrizzi, 1745.
2° (453 x 301mm). Half-title. Title in red and black with engraved vignette. Engraved frontispiece with medallion portrait of the author, and engraved portrait of the dedicatee, the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, by F. Polanzani after G. Piazzetta. Each of the 20 cantos with engraved plate, cartouche containing the argument and tailpiece, 5 of the tailpieces full-page, final plate portraying Piazzetta and Albrizzi, and engraved opening initials, all by Martin Schedl after Piazzetta. (Frontispiece slighty stained at lower margin, small repair to margin of title, dedicatee portrait and a few other leaves, some marginal soiling, spotting and staining, final leaves stained at inner margin.) Contemporary Italian mottled calf gilt with central (empty) armorial within large rococo block and corner-pieces built up of flowers and drawer-handles, gilt edges, speckled endpapers (rebacked, old spine preserved but worn, further restoration at corners, corners bumped, some chip or worm marks on covers).
FIRST EDITION OF THE MOST RENOWNED VENETIAN ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF THE 18TH CENTURY. Each of the introductory plates to the cantos has a separate engraved border, and is captioned with the names and arms of its sponsor; in the second edition, the names were replaced with verses from the poem.
