god. Translated from French by Andrew Chertsey (fl. 1502-1527). London: Wynkyn de Worde, 8 October 1521.
Chancery 2° (274 x 184mm). Collation: A-D6 (A1r title, 10 Commandments of the law, 5 Commandments of the of the Church, A1v full-page woodcut of the Crucifixion, A2r translator's prologue, A2v tabula, D6v blank); A-Z6 Aa-Xx6 (A1r text, Xx6r colophon, printer's device [McKerrow 46a], Xx6v full-page woodcut translator's device with borderpieces [McKerrow 49 and 50]). 288 leaves. 43 lines and headline with foliation, double column, abbreviated title printed below first column on rectos. Type: Duff 4:90B (text), 8:93 (title, headlines), 9:53B (text inserted in two woodcuts). Full-page woodcut of the Crucifixion, 7 small woodcuts [Hodnett 491, 492, 535, 465, 451, 362, 477, 538], numerous woodcut borderpieces including a domed building, woodcut initials from several sets, woodcut line-filler. (Two neat repairs in title, a few wormholes affecting a little text, occasional faint dampstaining.) CONTEMPORARY LONDON BLINDTOOLED CALF over wooden boards, sides panelled with two frames of one roll [Oldham Shrewsbury A.I. 15a(1)], two fore-edge clasps fastening on lower cover (renewed, later endpapers); modern box. SECOND EDITION. The work had appeared in three 15th-century French editions before Chertsey's translation into English (see previous lot). Although little is known of Chertsey, he was an active translator of devotional texts for Wynkyn de Worde, Caxton's successor. As he states in his preface, he undertook the translation of the Floure of the Commaundements 'Entendynge therby no sylver for to wyn Ne yet none other temporall gayne But welth of soules, escapynge the engyn of ye devyl of hel, his snares, and his chayne'.
