Italian or French, after Giambologna, 17th or 18th century
The centaur Nessus depicted rearing on his hind legs while carrying off the nymph Deianira on his back; on a later shaped rectangular wood base.
Warm brown patina with lighter high points; minor damages; losses to the base.

Another example of this model has recently appeared on the art market (see New York, Daniel Katz Ltd, European Sculpture, 6-18 May 2002, catalogue by K. Zock, no. 14), where it was attributed to Barthélemy Prieur (1536-1611), court sculptor to Henri IV of France.
