Lot Essay
These parcel-gilt mahogany cabinets are conceived in the French 'Empire' style promoted by C. Percier and P. Fontaine's Recueil de décorations intérieures of 1801. They may have been en suite with a pair of commodes, and intended for a bedroom appartment. Their antique style was promoted in Spain by King Charles IV (r. 1788-1808), whose study at the Casa del Labrador, Aranjuez, was illustrated in Percier and Fontaine's Recueil. However, their bold carved giltwood ornaments imitating ormolu clasps, relate to the designs of the Mallorcan sculptor and designer Adrian Ferran, which is illustrated in J. Massot Ramis d'Ayreflor, El Moble a les Illes Balears Segles X III-XIX, Barcelona, 1995, p. 191.
