A RARE MATCHED PAIR OF EXPORT 'HERRING SELLER' TANKARDS
CIRCA 1790
Each of cylindrical form with entwined berried strap handles and decorated primarily en grisaille with sepia detailing, with the herring seller wearing torn clothes, a wide-brimmed hat, torn stockings and clogs with holes revealing his toes, holding several fish on a ring in one hand and his pipe in the other, with a parcel tucked under one arm, below the gilt inscription HALLING JOSIA, one with a sepia and gilt band of foliage and berries below the rim, the other with a blue enamel band with gilt stars
