Three Inro [Medicine Case] and Five Ceramic Netsuke
Edo-Meiji Period (Late 18th-Late 19th Century)
The first oval with applied himotoshi, black-lacquer ground, decoration in gold and silver hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with kinpun and kirikane, compartments and risers gold nashiji, shoulders and rims gold fundame, each container holding an erotic ivory carving, ivory ojime in the form of two masks, small manju netsuke carved and stained with a Hannya mask; the second four cases, rounded rectangular with applied himotoshi, black-lacquer ground with kinpun of varying density, decoration in gold and silver hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with kirikane, compartments and risers gold nashiji, shoulders and rims gold fundame, ivory ojime in the form of a karako sitting in a jar, ivory netsuke; the third, single-case, decorated in coloured enamels moulded in relief; the fourth a manju netsuke of Satsuma ware with enamel and gilt decoration of chickens; the fifth a clam-shell containing a scene with three court ladies; the sixth a rounded square manju netsuke with blue-and-white decoration; the seventh a wasp on a pine-cone; the eighth a mokugyo
