Details
Grange Hermitage--Vintage 1962
South Australia. Penfolds
Good label. Level base of neck
This was my first exposure to Grange, in 1972, when the ever explorative Hugh Johnson bought a bottle to Christie's for me to taste. He said it was the Latour of Australia. Next, and the most memorable, tasted in the vineyard, a wonderful wine. M.B.
First Grange to be made predominantly from Kalimna (Barossa Valley) rather than Magill (Adelaide) fruit. Also the first Grange to use Adelaide Hills fruit. After the 1955, this is the second most successful Grange in Australian wine shows with 4 trophies and 20 gold, 10 silver and 3 bronze medals. Considered a top vintage from the start. Tasting note: brick red. Cedary, sweet fruit aromas with plenty of sweet fruit, concentration and fine-grained tannins. Rare. A.C.
Becoming rare. Often considered a classic Grange vintage. R.O.P.
