"THE MORE SUCCESS THE RUSSIANS HAVE, THE WORSE THEY WILL BEHAVE"

In the wake of the Allied victories in north Africa and the recent Casablanca Conference between Churchill and Roosevelt, Einstein pointedly expresses his reservations about the policies of the American government and the risks of aiding the Russians: "Your letter reminded me of the nice fairy tale of the seven Swabians: 'Little Jack, you go first; you wear the largest boots.' This is good, but boots alone are not sufficient. The big boots must belong to a goy."

The fellows ("kerle") in Washington today are actually much more reactionary than those people in London and there, I am regarded as a Red! I would be very gratified if the guys in North Africa [the Allies] would look to do the right thing. But instead, they install one reactionary or one fascist after the other. The more success the Russians have, the worse they will behave. You know that I do not lack good will; but I consider it too dumb to try and carry water."
