St. Theresa of Avila (1515-82) was born into an aristocratic family and entered the Carmelite convent in Avila, Spain, at the age of twenty. In 1562, she founded a new convent, St. Joseph, at Avila, which was the prototype for the (Discalced) Carmelite Order. She wrote a number of books, including her autobiography and the story of her foundations. She was canonised in 1622 by Alessandro Ludovisi, Gregory XV.
