Lot Essay

Born Dominic Guzman in Calaruega, Spain, St. Dominic (circa 1170-1221) founded the Dominican Order of Friars in the last seven years of his life. The Order spread across Europe rapidly, and he was cononised shortly after his death in 1234 by Ugolino dei Conti di Segni, Gregory IX. St. Dominic is frequently depicted with a rosary, which he was erroneously believed to have invented.
