A 19th-Century English lacquered-brass botanist's microscope,

Details
A 19th-Century English lacquered-brass botanist's microscope,
signed on the foot A. Ross London and numbered 1764, in a fitted mahogany carrying case -- 19.4cm. (7 5/8in.) wide

See Colour Illustration

Rack and pinion on the main limb raises or lowers a triangular section limb within. On the top of this is a horizontal limb, adjustable via rack and pinion, with an unthreaded brass circle at the end. Two screws with knurled turning wheels are used to attach the stage to the main limb, and this in turn threads into a flat triangular foot with a hole for the substage mirror. Contained in the box is a small leatherette-covered case containing two objectives. These are threaded in such a way as to imply the existence of a barrel for this instrument originally, now lost. The box also contains a table-standing bull's-eye condensor, tweezers and scissors (later).
Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis
