Paris silver hallmark for 1770
With sharply tapering blade of flattened diamond section etched and gilt at the forte with trophies of arms and foliated strapwork, the guard cast and chased in relief with rococo scrolls, flowers and foliage, involving trophies of arms, torches, birds, and musical instruments and ten oval laurel wreaths of which eight frame profile portrait heads, one female, and wooden grip bound with twisted silver wire and crimped silver-gilt ribbon, charge mark of Julien Alaterre

Lot Essay

The two portrait busts on the pommel are possibly of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, one of the four on the shell appears to be King Henri IV, and two, since they are laurel-crowned, may represent Roman Emperors
