Lot Essay

The girl is from southern India. The seated man is a 'Maratha' from Mararashtra - the renowned 'great country' surrounding the Deccan plateau which forms southern India's heartland. A watercolour copy of this second drawing is in an album of 945 sketches, compiled by Robert Home, now in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Victoria & Albert Museum. It has been suggested that it was Thomas Daniell who copied Home's original drawing rather than vica versa.
