Lot Essay

This reed-enriched sofa relates to a 'Grecian Sofa' pattern in Thomas Sheraton's, Cabinet Dictionaryi 1803 (pl. 73); while the legs' antiquarian ornament of whorled shells derive from mid-18th century seats (R.L. Brohier, Furniture of the Dutch Period in Ceylon, 1993).
A related pair of ebony arm-chairs was sold Christie's Amsterdam, 28 September 2000, lot 329.
