The bed has elegantly reeded and vase-baluster pillars, in the Pompeian or antique fashion popularised around 1800 by pattern-books issued by Thomas Sheraton; and as featured on the early 19th century 'Raffles' chair. The head-board's Venus-shell motif was also a popular motif adopted for furniture carved in Ceylon's Galle District. (J. Veenendaal, Furniture from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India during the Dutch period, The Hague, 1985, p. 132, pl. 166; and A. Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, London, 2001, nos. 192 and 186).
