A Burmese iron bell, 17th/18th Century, with 2nd Battn. South Wales Borderers inscription, 1885
of domed form, the top with two mythical beasts adjoined by a thick arch, from which the bell was suspended, raised bands, panels of pali script and deity figures, with later inscription reading Presented to the Officers Mess of this Battn, by Major W. P. Symons, 2nd Battn South Wales Borderers, D. A. A. G. and L. M. G. Burmah Field Force, Palace Mandalay 28th November 1886.
The 2nd Battn South Wales Borderers (previously known as the 2nd Battn of the 24th Regt of Foot, the name changing in 1881) were involved in the famous encounter at Rorke's Drift in 1879 as part of the Zulu Wars. The Battn was sent from South Africa to India where they were to serve until 1895.
