Lot Essay

John McGhie was a Glasgow-based painter of coastal scenes, figurative subjects and portraits. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art, at the Royal Academy Schools and the Académie Julian. The influence of the French artists of the Barbizon school is evident in his freely handled and vital works.
