PALLADIO, Andrea (1508-1580). The Four Books of Architecture, London: Isaac Ware, 1738. 4 parts in one volume, 2° (405 x 252mm). 4 engraved sectional titles, 212 numbered engraved plates, 7 in the letterpress, engraved head- and tail-pieces after William Kent. (First title and a few plates lightly waterstained, first title and front endpaper detached, marginal spotting throughout, one plate stained, a few clean marginal tears.) Contemporary diced calf gilt, coat-of-arms stamped on covers (repaired along front joints, extremities lightly worn, head and tail of spine chipped). Provenance: Foster (ownership inscription in capitals on first title).
The only issue of Isaac Ware's translation made from the original Italian edition from 1570. The title borders and plates are reverse productions on copper of the original woodcuts of 1570. The unsigned plates are by Ware. Fowler 229.
