WRIGHT, Thomas (1711-86). Universal Architecture, Book I. Six Original Designs of Arbours, London: printed for the author, 1755. Book I only (of 2), oblong 2° (297 x 462mm). Title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, list of subscribers incorporating an engraved view, 12 engraved plates comprising a view and a plan of six arbours (lettered A-F). (Some plates with marginal repairs, plate B with 2 long but closed marginal tears, one just touching image, light marginal soiling.) Modern half calf.
SCARCE FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Book II of Universal Architecture, containing designs for grottos, was published in 1758. A planned Book III, designs for alcoves, was never published. "There are no other pattern-books of grottos, rustic buildings and ruined follies, nor at that time were there any books of architectural design so attractively presented in complete landscape settings" (Eillen Harris, p. 509). Archer 357.1: "an attractive collection of designs for arbors and grottoes"; Harris 951.
