Part 3 only (of 4), engraved title and 100 round emblematic illustrations by Hans Sibmacher in the text. (Light waterstaining and discolouration). Adams C449; Landwehr German 164; Praz p. 295.
2 works in one volume, 4° (196 x 143mm.). Contemporary South German calf, gilt fleuron in panels of spine, 2 frame borders round sides, the outer one blindstamped and the inner one with gilt fleuron cornerpieces, at the centre the arms of ARCHDUKE FERDINAND OF AUSTRIA. (Head and foot of spine and 3 corners repaired). Provenance: Archduke Ferdinand of Austria (arms on sides and 2 inscriptions on title 'Biblioth. Arch. Ferdin.').
FIRST EDITION of both works. The Academica Altorfina contains discourses by students from Nuremberg and vicinity on emblematic subjects, while the Symbolorum contains emblems devoted to birds and insects, written by the great German botanist and physician, Camerarius. The volume was previously owned by Ferdinand II (1578-1637), Holy Roman Emperor and an ardent catholic, who was largely the cause of the Thirty Years War through his antipathy towards his Bohemian subjects. One of the chief suspects in the assassination of Wallenstein, it was his boast that at the end of his reign he had eradicated protestantism in his ancestral lands.
