3 parts in one volume, 2° (310 x 195mm). Engraved additional title, title in red and black with engraved vignette, 123 engraved plates including 7 full-page portraits, 31 double-page or folding views, 16 double-page maps, one folding and 69 half-page illustrations, engraved headpiece and woodcut initials and tailpieces. (A few small holes to the folding map of America, tears to additional title, minor losses at lower fore-edge margins to a few quires, including maps of Novi Belgii, Brasil and Paraguay, occasional light unobtrusive spotting.) Contemporary Dutch calf gilt, spine in compartments, lettered in the second, the others with repeat pattern of stylised foliage (rebacked and restored retaining original covers and spine).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE AND RICHLY ILLUSTRATED WORK, 'A CLASSIC BOOK ON AMERICA' (Borba de Moraes). In contrast to later editions this copy includes early strong impressions of the plates, which illustrate the customs, festivals, occupations, religious rites and battles of the native Indians. This issue includes the portrait of Maurice of Nassau (not mentioned in the index) and one of the first views of New Amsterdam, 'without any doubt, the handsomest, and ... the most agreeable view of Dutch New York' (Asher's Bibliographical Essay, p.23).
