Lot Essay

Albert and Frank East, sons of Francis East, set up their own manufactory in about 1894 at South Road, Lochee, Dundee; Francis East had settled in Dundee in 1860 having been a chair maker in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire and he imported to Lowland Scotland the manufacture of inexpensive Windsor chairs, producing distinctly Scottish designs as well as specialised seating such as advertising chairs and barbers' chairs. This type of chair was made in cooperation with the Falkirk Iron Company who made the sheet metal-enamelled panels. Once common, these chairs used to be found in many grocery and hardware stores.
