Lot Essay

The stamps used around the central band of ornament to this mortar are patently (English) Renaissance in origin - the bird headed arabesques in particular. The head-dress of the leaf-scroll term figures is also typically 16th century in origin, but the mortar is probably early 17th century in manufacture.
