An Elizabethan bronze mortar
By Richard Bowler, Colchester circa 1600
The rim cast with the name and date RICARDVS BOWLER ME FECIT 1600, further cast to the central body with the owner's initials twice M.L. within panels of arabesque ornament within ropetwist borders
7½in. (19cm.) diameter; 6in. (15.2cm.) high;
and an associated English bronze pestle, 17th century -- 10½in. (26.7cm.) long

Lot Essay

Richard Bowler, Colchester (fl.1587-1603).

Connoisseur Magazine, June 1934 - details a mortar by Bowler dated 1595. The article further quotes a record of 1600 "....Ambrose Gilbert did grevouslye hurte and wounded one Richard Bowler of Colchester bellfounder soe as it is thought the said Richard is in greate daunger of Dethe". Bowler was a native of Nottingham.
