AN IMPORTANT SANDSTONE TORSO OF A FEMALE DEITY
KHMER, KOH KER STYLE, SECOND QUARTER OF 10TH CENTURY

Lot Essay

As discussed in the introduction the Koh Ker period saw the introduction of a, temporary, more vigorous style, even inclining towards a gigantism. Nevertheless the bodies of these deities were carved with a certain movement and softness as can be viewed from this imposing female torso. A comparable large torso, although four-armed, is published by Sherman Lee in Ancient Cambodian Sculpture, New York 1969, pl. 12.
