He was chairman of the Reviewing Committee for the Export of Works of Art and a member of The Adivsory Council of the Victoria and Albert Museum. An important selection from his library, which is well known for its Natural History and Jacobite History, is being sold at Christie's in London on 20th November.

A SET OF EIGHT GEORGE III MAHOGANY SIDE CHAIRS
Third quarter 18th Century, possibly Scottish
Each with padded back and seat covered in close-nailed associated gros and petit point needlework of flowers, foliage, birds and animals interspersed with flaming hearts and with a pendant border, on pierced Gothic square legs, three central stretchers replaced, the petit point needlework 17th Century and rebacked in the 18th Century and with later restorations (8)

The needlework on these chairs comes from Ethie Castle, Arbroath, Angus.
