A GEORGE II MAHOGANY OPEN ARMCHAIR
Second quarter 18th Century, possibly Scottish
The shaped toprail above a pierced interlaced splat with serpentine arms above a padded serpentine seat covered in crimson velvet, on cabriole legs with claw-and-ball feet, later cross-struts, with dealers paper label inscribed in ink 'E.d. T. Fry about 1896 worth £To FPF', small replaced element in the splat, two ears replaced.

Lot Essay

The chair's ribboned back, is fretted with a lozenged compartment, as featured in one of Thomas Chippendale's 'gothick' patterns in his Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754 (pl. XXI). The splat also features on a related eagle-clawed chair illustrated in J. Kirk, American Furniture and the British Tradition to 1830, New York, 1982 (fig. 875).
