Lot Essay

The elegantly scrolled legs filled with guilloche and its fluted frieze centred by a stylised 'Venus shell badge' are derived from designs by Wiliam Jones in his Gentleman or Builder's Companion of 1739 (in particular plates 27 & 30). A similar pier table with foliate swags below the frieze was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 19 october 2000, lot 223 ($64,625).
