WAGNER, Richard (1813-1883). Autograph musical quotation signed ('Richard Wagner), Vienna, 27 December 1862, five bars from Die Walküre, headed 'Wotan', the text 'Dieser Augen leuchtendes Paar, das oft ich lächelnd gekost', subscribed 'Auf baldiges Wiedersehen! Müde u[nd] schlaflos', one page, 4to (202 x 180mm) (somewhat browned, more intensely at margins).
The quotation is 'Wotan's Farewell', from the last moments of Die Walküre. In the published libretto, the phrase begins 'Der Augen ...'.
The provenance of the piece, from Wagner's stay in Vienna in 1862/3 when he was conducting excerpts from the Ring, links it intriguingly with lots 52 and 53, both of which spring from the same period.
